in order to run a steel spur you need a hardened clutchbell.....the spur is not designed to fail at all..thats false information.....the slipper clutch is designed to absorb the big shocks to the drivetrain....not a melting spurgear. I run steel in both Tmaxxs and have never had an issue at all......always set your mesh correctly and make sure your slipper is adjusted properly and you will never have a problem with plastic...until a small pebble or something jams in between it and clutchbell and then the spurgear will break teeth or melt....thats the advantage of running steel.
so, in this situation the spur gear will fail (per design) and save the rest of the drive train right?
no....the spurgear in a Monster Truck is not designed to fail.....the slipper clutch is designed to slip before any damage occurs to any drivetrain parts even if a pebble goes into the mix...Picture yourself driving your truck and you can actually see a pebble get stuck between the spurgear and the clutchbell the engine wants the clutchbell to turn so it exerts pressure on the spurgear which is attached to the slipper clutch....when adjusted properly slips and no power goes to the tranny.

With 1/8 th scale truggies and buggies you have no slipper and they run hardened steel on hardened steel.....so when a pebble gets stuck the engine just stops....I won't argue the fact that damage may occur but in my personal experience no damage occured when a pebble got jammed between the clutchbell and spurgear on my .28 truggy...the engine stalled and upon closer inspection I noticed the rock jam...got it out and fired it back up...end of.

The whole point is you can run steel if you choose I got both mine in a trade and they have performed flawlessly so far I must have close to 6 gallons on the one and it is showing little wear whether I replace it with steel again is up in the air.
