As a first order approximation the output voltage of the charger with a battery connected is equal to the unloaded battery voltage PLUS the voltage drop associated with the internal resistance of the battery and the charging leads. When the battery is disconnected from the charger and connected to a loaded voltmeter the voltage displayed is the unloaded battery voltage MINUS the voltage drop associated with the internal resistance of the battery and the connecting leads.
