"Deadstick" is sort of a contraction of terms which originated in the "good ol days". It means that the engine (power) is dead and all you have left is the "stick" to guide the plane to an "arrival" on the earth. I say "arrival" because many of them can't be called "landings". So think of it more as dead-stick.
