I myself run a 46AX and have yet to have a dead stick. Just tune it right and keep on top it's maintainable (check fuel lines for cracks, check the glow plug, etc).
As for the fuel running out, do some homework, more like field work and figure out the the time and start using a timer.
Here's how I did it.
Counted how many cranks it took to fill the tank. Flew for 5 minutes and counted how many cranks to fill it back up. Then upped the time to 7 minutes and counted again. up to 9 minutes and then to 10. After 10 minutes i still have 1/3 tank left. That's about the sweet spot for me... 10 minute session is good for me, and gives me enough fuel to try atleast 5-6 approaches. I'd rather fly a shorter flight and have a chance to fly another, rather than one long final flight
