Default RE: Deadstick Landings

If you are flying at a field with others and your engine cuts out, be sure to call "deadstick" loudly, most guys will gladly try to get out of your way and let you bring it in any way you can. Most pilots have been there before (for one reason or another) and we all appreciate a clear path to the landing strip when we've only got one shot at it. One poor guy at my club had a dead stick, and another guy was already on the field retrieving a stalled plane. He had to land his deadstick in the corn next to the field to steer clear of the guy on the field. Because of the bad timing, what would have been an uneventful and damage-free dead stick landing ended up costing him several hours of repair work! But he had his priorities straight, safety first, even if you have to ditch the plane elsewhere.

The biggest problems for dead sticks that I've seen are:

1) being too far out to bring it back to the field
2) having the field obstructed forcing you to land elsewhere
3) flaring a little too much and stalling the plane on the landing approach
