Default AMA coverage only good if you have a spotter?

I thought I read, or at least got the impression from, a post stating the insurance coverage from the AMA wasn't valid if you're flying solo.

One of the fields at my club doesn't require a spotter, the other does.

What's the AMA's policy?

Thanks in advance.
