Getting rid of the ratchet is a wonderful mod, but completely removing the tab is not the way to do it. The stick is all too loose with that method and simple tail controls will cause unwanted collective input. The best way IMO is to put some fuel tubing or heat shrink over the tab and screw the tab in to your specfication of resistance on the stick. I did this with my CP's controller with fuel tubing and love it.
Another way to get rid of the ratchet in the transmitter is to just flip the metal thing upside down, i agree that taking it off completely is too loose, but your fuel tune idea sounds promising...I'll have to try it myself.
