a longer stroke isn't a problem, the cylinder is NOT attached to the hinge so as long as you set it so that when it's fully extended there isn't any pressure on the hinge the extra length will be on the closed end where the pressure is applied to the lip of the door and the former holding the ball point, you don't have to use a stop with this setup as it will not brake the hinge.
