I was just about to suggest a free flight model. Its a full build but will take a lot less time than an RC model. Also by the time you add an engine, radio gear etc to a model the price will be a lot more than $50. This way he will be able to build a model that will fly from bits of wood in a quick time. If he likes it then go from there.
