I'd back out of the deal - period. No negotiation of the shipping costs. If he does ship it on the cheap, it probably won't arrive in very good condition. Further, there's no guarantee he'll pack it correctly in the first place.

Dishonesty at that stage is a dealbreaker. And don't forget the negative feedback. Warn others.
