Spektrum dx2, you get 2.4ghz technology and a build in failsafe for around $169 or less.
Going 2.4GHz is a definite bonus, no more crystals, built-in failsafe, and the Spektrum radio is not expensive either. Though Spektrum does have its problems as compared to other 2.4GHz radios, it is a great leap above the RTR radios of any brand.
Another thing I forgot to mention: To help save space in the batt box, getting rid of the 4x AA cell pack and going with a NiMH RX batt pack is a big step too. These are smaller, the 5-cell arrangement allows you to slip some of the wiring into the the left and right corners where there are only 2 cells, and most of all, 6V ! The 4cell batt pack can only give you 6V if you go with non-rechargable AA batts. AA rechachables suck because they are only 1.2V per batt
