Default RE: YS-170CDI Flight Report

I was not referring to the price of the CDI version, just the price for any YS engine. What does a regular 170 go for, $800 or so? For that price tag you can buy a large gas engine and fly giant scale. As a sport engine, the YS line is grossly overpriced regardless of the economy or quality they offer. As a competition engine, they are superb.

Mark - a DZ170 costs about $690 or so, depending on where you buy it. The CDI version is likely another $200+, so it is certainly expensive. An equivalent 'good' glo engine will cost you perhaps $450 or so, so the extra price for the "YS Benefits" - whatever these might be - is about $200. This price is easily made up in fuel costs.

Giant scale is good but also very expensive in terms of the cost of the airplane, servos, etc. It's a different beast. The point is that if one wishes to stick to glo engines, then Fuel cost is a critical issue to consider since most engines today are designed for high Nitro (which is a little bit of a pity, unfortunately). Personally, I think that the extra price tag on a YS is worth the money (Just as it is on a 2-stroke JETT) since you do get better quality with a YS compared to, say, an OS or other engine.
