In essence, the Kavan brake is the same thing, just a larger diameter winding. Instead of pulling in a plunger or piston, it pulls in the brake disc.

oh, ok then that is what I was thinking. Sounds like a really good method. is there a link to these? Not Hobby Lobby but some actual spec info so I can see how they work on existing wheels? Instruction manual would work.
