RE: Ike Aftermath
I was at the meeting Horrace and Dick Mundee was the president. He was running the meeting. Anyway, he is the one that made it very clear to many of us that he was into jets now and he would see to it that a hard runway was the first priority. He is the one that said that. Then when the land was purchased, all the money went for grading and crushed concrete and hydro-seeding, a well, etc, but no runway.
Fighter Feild had been established years earlier. Me and the other Pole Dodgers went and flew there a few times before we joined Jetero. We were at Jetero a couple of years before the club was kicked out of the land fill. So, I'm certain that Fighter Field was up and running long before that meeting. I don't understand your mention of them at that meeting. They had turned down an offer to merge the two clubs. End of story. Then the proposal for the current site went up for a vote. There were some in the club that wanted to wait and locate something, less grand, shall we say. But most of us wanted to own our field and not be kicked out anymore. You had found a good site, so we pulled the trigger.
But you never promised the club any runway. You were neck deep in land deals and IRA stuff. Mundee is the man that promised me and other members a hard runway if we voted for your proposal. He ran the meeting. He was in charge. He is responsible for what he said and what he promised. Thats how I remember. And yes that was a great place to have meetings !!
