When he was designing engines under his name, which was the basis of the Veco and many K&B designs, he was a machinist. I don't know if he received a degree or not. Duke Fox was a technician and a bit of a self taught engineer. But today an engineer would not even learn anything about a machine shop, except that an industrial engineer would time and study the manufacturing methods, and devise faster better methods. Well at least sometimes they are faster and better.
