Is this a new motor? Maybe new to you? Have you run it before? The easiest way to check it is pull the plug, put the cap back on the plug, ground the plug to the block and spin the motor with an electric starter. Yes you can turn it over by hand but it's much easier to see the spark when you are not trying to spin it fast enough to get it to spark.
