Default RE: is this ok?

Most clubs provide training and instructors ( remember though that people do this on a volunteer basis, so no one "owes" you anything...).

If you can get training and instruction via the club, you'll probably do well with the Mustang.

I've been there myself.

I would however suggest also obtaining a simulator.

At worst, FMS with a cheap USB PC controller about $20.00 from Nitroplanes...FMS is free...

A median simulator like FS-One works too, and it features the PTS P-51 in it.

At best a high end sim ( if your computer is up to the task as you need a GOOD system... ) such as G4....

The simulator will let you practice and get orientation down, so you barely have to think about it.

This will lower the likelyhood of a crash later, and speed up your at field training.

The instructors will help you trim out and do final preparation on the plane.

Then they will help you to keep from crashing it.

Note: Standard trainers are more forgiving than the PTS, so anything you can do to offset this ( e.g. the sim ) helps.

I would talk to the instructor(s) FIRST at let them know what you are thinking of doing.

The upside of the PTS is that once you are done with it as a trainer, it is a GREAT "sports" plane which you will not tire of.
