Wheel pants work fine on grass, as long as you give them outer support. The axle has to extend the entire width of the pant, and slip inside an aircraft ply square that is secured to the inside of the pant. I am no Minnflyer, but my cheesy paint drawing might give you guys an idea what I mean.
