I have been looking into that problem too, and after reading for many hours on various sites it would seem the critical side is battery to esc, which should not exceed 12 inches, the shorter the better. esc to motor seems to be unlimited to a point with minor loss's from wire resistance. Another thing I found out is that with brushless motors you need to run an esc for each motor or you will end up with all sorts of grief
