Default Installing retracts in a built up wing??

Hey all.

Ok, I'm currently building a warbird, bf 109, and have come to the point of fitting the retracts.
They are Spring Air items, nice and sturdy.

Problem is placing them in the scale location is fine, but the only way to get the wheel to completely retract into the wing is if I cut the main spar out to give clearence for the wheel.
This is the part I am not comfortable with.

Does anyone have any idea on how the spar can be 'reinforced' to allow this?
The 109 is being scratchbuilt from Brian Taylor plans and is .60 size (1/6 scale approx)

It just seems wrong to remove a section of spar to make this happen, but this is also my forst set of retracts, so I'm not sure.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers
