Shoe Polish? I remember that smell - sort of sweet?. Control line planes flying in a park near where I lived as a kid. Someone told me it was Nitro Benzene. It was very popular with the B Class (5cc) team race fraternity as a range extender. But then it was discovered that it is also highly carcinogenic and it vanished from model fuels ovenight.
