I already know the McDaniels glow driver, but I like to build this kind of devices myself: it's much more fun imho.
I've already built a crude unit for my Cub powered by a Saito FA-90 TS and it works very well. I plan on improving it for my radial making it able to handle a much higher current through a reduction in the on-state resistance. All will be fed by about 10 AA size nimh cells wired in parallel with 2500 mah capacity each (I use four such cells in the Cub and they work just fine).
So I know what you mean with "just switch on and start"
