Search for the MSDS for the product you bought. JD starting fluid is basically 100% ether. Some starting fluids, especially cheap ones can contain 60% heptane, and will not perform as well. You really want the fuel to contain ~35% total ether content. If there is heptane in the starting fluid treat it as kerosene.

My advice, if you are new to diesels is to buy a can of ready made fuel. That way you can be sure that the fuel is good and actually learn how to start the engine, what it should sound like, etc. After you burn a gallon, you can try mixing fuel.
