Check your brakes first of coruse but to me it sound like there could be somthing wrong with the front diff.. maybe a gear was not lined up or somthing inside the diff. Does everything still work after you heard the snap? Might end up taking the diff apart if it comes down to it but i would see if you can get everything working first before you take the 3 hr's to taking the diff apart and puting back together.
