I apologize as the photo is rather old. I think what you are looking for is the balsa wedge shown in the pic below. I think that it adds stability to the landing gear so that the wheels do not find their way into the wheel pants which causes a lot of mishaps on landings. I have always incorporated Haffke's design into all my Gee Bees and the landings are picture perfect I think because of it.
