Insurance claim on model plane was allegedly bogus
Thursday, 21 August 2008
A Burnsville man is charged with two felonies for allegedly filing a false insurance claim on an unharmed model airplane.
David Duane Schwantz, 48, is charged with insurance fraud and theft in connection with a $12,000 claim filed Dec. 5, 2006, according to the criminal complaint filed this month in Dakota County District Court.
On Nov. 7, 2006, a three-car accident at an intersection near his home pushed one of the vehicles into Schwantz’s driveway, damaging his pickup truck, the complaint said.
A Burnsville police officer was present when a towing company removed the topper from the truck, which was empty in the back. Schwantz didn’t mention damage to contents of the truck when talking to officers about the accident.
Later that day, when an officer returned to Schwantz’s home at 93 W. 136th St. to deliver the accident report, he saw a model airplane in good condition in the garage, the complaint said.
The officer learned days later that Schwantz had filed the claim for damages done to the plane in the accident. The officer contacted the insurance company, which stopped payment after agreeing to settle the claim for $11,777.
