I have been a trainer for about 4 years and would like to hear the criteria other clubs use to solo a trainee and how your training sessions are structured .
Jetero RC Club, Humble, TX AMA Charter 1218.

Vice-President is chief of Instruction but usually delegates authority (NOT responsibility) to an experienced Instructor.

NOTE: No person gets more than 3 lessons without joining the club. Must be AMA

1. New trainee receives about 2 hours 1 on 1 ground school and has a grade card entered into the "BOOK* which has the G/S outline, club rules, Safety Code etc. etc.

2. Student can choose an instructor pilot or take as they come. We try to get at least 2 instructors to fly with student prior to solo. Last guy I worked with I got up to speed, then he got 4 flights with another guy, then was soloed another day by another IP.

3. A student can be instructed by any solo-qualified adult Club Member, or a designated Club Instructor. ONLY a Club designated Instructor can administer the solo-qualification check which is:
a. Demonstrate frequency knowledge (Use of the Tmttr. Impound)
b. Safe Start and Taxi procedures (Club Rules) No equipment scattered, no high-speed inside flight-line, calling entering runway, taking-off and landing>
c. Complete a Buddy-Cord flight of T.O., right and left turns, recovery from unusual attitudes, loop, roll, and complete 3 successive landings without stopping the engine, then taxi-back and shutdown. Refuel and go without buddy-cord for 3 TOs and Landings same drill as before. That's it.
During the landing approaches, a big deal is to NOT fly toward any of the 5 pilot stations or go behind the flight line. Good judgment is shown when a bad landing approach is terminated by a safe go-around, without check pilot saying to do so.

It all boils down to, "Will I feel safe on the flight line with this guy flying?"
I suppose this is an AMA thread because we are doing the best we can to reduce AMA's liability. Our biggest problems come not from the newbies we train, but those that come into the club already *Soloed*????.
