For me, if the engine sounds like it is running out of breath, hollow, wheezing, then I know it is lean.

If it is rumbling, powerful throaty sound, then it is rich or good.

Better yet, check for tons of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. More means rich setting, less or non means too lean.
