RE: Black Magic VF3 Build Thread
Alright, well a CDI equipped V3 has now flown and all I can say is WOW!!! This engine is just SICK!! It will idle at 1200 all day long. I flew the 18X11 WPN prop and didnt' really like the speed, so I'm going to play with some props. It was a little slower than I like. The downlines are just stupid with the idle that low. You also have to land with power or the plane just falls out of the sky. Starting is so smooth and easy. The biggest different though is fuel consumption. I am not running the low oil setup. I am running 30% Heli as I always have. Previously I could fly one Masters sequence and maybe 1/3-1/2 of a second sequence on a 20oz main tank and 2 oz header tank. With the CDI I removed the header tank as I put the CDI unit up in the nose. That left me with a 20oz main tank. I flew the first flight and couldn't believe how little fuel I used. When talking to Richard at YS he told me you don't get the YS kicks with the ignition so running it out of fuel isnt a big deal. So I went up and just started flying. I went through the Masters sequence twice and was flying the 3rd, when on the half square leading into the spin it coughed. It didnt die, but I landed and there was still a LITTLE fuel left in the tank. I think i could've finished the spin and been fine, but I didnt. So I basically flew the sequence 3 times on a 20oz tank. Fuel consumption appears to be about 1/3 what it was before. There is MUCH less smoke trail as well as you don't need to have the engine running rich. I can't imagine how little there would be on the low oil or the low smoke fuel.
I am flying the igniton plugged into a spare port on my receiver with dual tech aero regulators and 2 950mah LiPop packs. It looks like I am using about 200mah per flight, which seems to be right in line with what everyone else is reporting. Absolutely no radio issues with the 2.4 FASST system.
I am definitely impressed. Going back over this evening to try the 18.1X11 that I've been flying and also the 18.1X12 prop. The ignition doesnt mind being loaded down a little more so I'm anxious to see how it performs. There is a new 18.5X12 WPN that the Japanese are hooked on and I have one coming, but wont have time to play with it before the weekend and I have a contest, so I'm just going to find something I like for the next 2 days and then play some more next week.
