Default RE: only the upper gear will spin

ORIGINAL: OldScaleGuy

With the blades off it is easy to confirm correct rotation. Typically, i only unplug one connector between the motor and esc when working on it, taping off the male connector just in case there is some contact. So, it is next to impossible to change rotation direction.
Thats fine for a brushed motor where there is only two wires between the esc and the motor .. but for brushless I was told by an old Electrical Engineering type's ( You know the type .. the guy you go to when you need an epromm programmed ) that the cheaper esc's might have skimped on the isolation circuit and removing one wire isnt enough to be 100% sure that the motor wont start. Something about a sensor motor vs sensor less motor and the stator coil sending a feedback signal and it being picked up out of phase and causing the motor to just spin up to max rpm with ANY throttle input. I really didnt understand it all but the parts I did understand sounded plausible and for me there isnt any downside to unplugging 2 wires .. Worst case is that you have to reverse the motor and I already know the behavior of my heli with the motor reversed so I can detect and correct it easly.
