awhile back there was a question about this topic in the nitroplanes forum and john from nitro explained why they needed it.

maybe it will help to explain why they need it. it seems if you order using a card with a different adress than where the item is being shipped to or use an international CC it will also raise a flag so at that point they ask for the info.
