sorry that you have lost your model, I had the issue with the retracts doing their own thing when switching on as you stated

I found the reason was operator error (ie Me ). If the power is switched off with the retracts up (i did this to load the model in my car) the clever spekky system remembers this and it becomes the position for every power up. To undo this, power on, cycle your gear a couple of times, finishing in the down position and then power off.

Yes it is a bit of a quirk, but like everything new, once your used to it, it's a non event.
