RE: Ultracote & Monocote
I started out using monokote on all my planes and also coverite and never found anything wrong with either. Everyone I talk to though says Ultracote is the greatest thing since sliced bread so I said what the heck I will give it a try to see for myself.Istarted cutting pieces of ultracote the right size for my wing and then I went to peel them off the backing. On the full piece of ultracote I peeled off, it put zig zag creases all the way down all over the entire piece. These creases were not the kind you can just iron out, they actualy pulled the paint away and just left the clear cover where you can see through them now. So, I thought that maybe I just pulled it off to vigerously and pulled the next one off very carefully. Long story short, no matter how I pulled off the coveirng it made zig zag creases. Anyway I strarted Ironing it on the wing and I will admit it sticks to balsa pretty good and smooths out nicely (With the exception of those zig zag wrinkles.) When it comes to ironing it to itself you better have it where you want the first time because there is no peeling it back up and repositioning it. Once it has been Ironed on to another peice of ultracote the paint backing just peeled off if I tried to reposition it. Then when it comes to triming the excess off I had to go restock my inventory of #11 blades. Ultracote does trim easy with an xacto knife, I would cut a couple of inches and then it will either bind or tear and then trying to start it again is a pain.
Longer story even shorter, I will more than likely never buy or use ultracote on another plane. Monokote is far better material and a much better value for my money. Just my opinion.
