Doug - In all honesty, I don't think a "gas newbie" ought to be mucking about with engine timing without some one-on-one help. I've seen folks get CW confused with CCW, and not realize there is a time lag in rotation between when the sensor starts detecting the magnet, and when the thing fires. I may be mistaken, but I think timing is more "advanced" gasser stuff....like tearing into the metering needle level in a Walbro.
Anyone *could* do it, but that doesn't mean anyone *should* do it. Just my .02
