Need the brand of ESC to be sure, but I suspect that "12C" on it means 12 Cells.  The ESC doesn't really care what the battery can or cannot put out.

"C" is used several ways and the meaning is often determined by the context; i.e. it means one thing on an ESC and another on a cell or battery, and yet another on a charger.
