Ghia, by no means do you need a $300 engine to race. The hobby shop guys are just making you scared and pay more. Check around on amainhobbies for engines. Many of them have great reviews and are under $200. A buggy will do fine with a fairly cheap .21. You don't have to have the fastest engine to have fun at the track!
