Don't forget that you should also be in either F. Mode 1 (Idle Up) or throttle hold (in which case you don't need to move the stick). For F. Mode 1 you will need to center the stick, but disconnect the motor.

The other thing to remember is that with the blades at 9 and 3 o-clock you are dealing with pitch - if you did this with the blades at 12 and 6 o-clock you will be dealing with elevator.
