It is basically only there to improve visibility of the model. It also makes a great place to attach the boom support rods. I have found that they can catch the blades in extreme situation and actual cause a much harder boom strike. I paint mine bright yellow or orange to get better viability. If you don't like it just take it off. It will not hurt anything.
