I would try to find a good used losi 1.0, rc8, d8, or jammin x1cr. put money into good motor/pipe and servos. might be a little more than 300, but in the long run, you'll want better
servos/radio etc anyways
You forgot the radio that you'll end up having to replace or upgrade. Buy the 8ight rtr and you have it all. Great radio. Great buggy. Starter box. Engine. Pipe. Warranty. This of course is if you're serious about racing and such. It is a lot of money, but if you buy a buggy for $300 and put a engine, pipe, and radio in it it will still cost the same, maybe more. If it was me I'd just save my money and buy the rtr.
