If you can get your hands (or eyes) on a copy of Building and FlyingScale Model Aircraft by Walter Musciano, there is an entire chapterdevoted to building flying a whip powered version of the Bell X-1. Thisis the book that got it all started for me back in the '60's and a musthave for C/L folks if only nostalgia purposes.
