I like your method. There is a similar rib stitch method shown on The Cub Den http://www.thecubden.org/ with some more detailed drawings. Your method is a little simpler and produces more stitches faster. The Cub Den has a diagram showing a good way to tie the stitches so that they run parallel to each other on the nail board. The site also has some other info on adding other scale details.
