I use to use 3 also,...for pattern and IMAC planes. Pattern:1-normal flight, 2-snaps, 3-spins,etc. No right or wrong way,..just pilot preference. I have gone to two rates,.......to minimize the switch flipping between entry and exits. Fly what you are the most confortable with and adjust as you learn more and move up in classes. My opinion anyway,...........
