Default Questions about Duratrax Intellipeak Twin Pulse

I have a Duratrax Intellipeak Twin Pulse charger. I have had a couple of issues with the charger "overcharging" my NiMh packs. I have 4 different packs - 7-cell hump pack Trinity 5000 mah, 7-cell hump pack ener-G 4200 mah, 6-cell stick Integy 4200 mah, and 6-cell stick Venom 3600 mah. The Venom pack and the EnerG pack are both new. The others are older, but I do not know the age.

What has been happening is the battery packs are getting very hot during charging, but before peak detection is indicated. The first time I charged the Venom pack it got extrememly hot (170+ deg F). I was not monitoring perhaps as closely as I could have been, but that is hot. Since then, I have been monitoring temps closely while charging. I got the new EnerG pack and followed the manufacturers instructions for first time charging. However, I had to take the battery off the charger before peak had been indicated as it reached 130 deg F. That is the temp that EnerG does not want you to exceed.

The charger has a 3.5A min charging rate, but I cannot find a maximum charge rate in any of the documentation or online anywhere. I tried measuring the amps with my multmeter while charging, but either it is charging 10A or more, or I am not using the correct method to measure the charge amps.

So the questions really are - Is this charger working correctly? Is there something I can do to meausure actual charge amps during the charging? Is charging at over 1C going to decrease battery life, and by how much?

Thanks.
