RE: Watcha building this winter??
Like Blake, I recently joined SPA, but I haven't yet attended any SPA events because I don't have a SPA legal airplane. I'm determined to remedy that over the winter and I've finally decided to scratch build a Mustang X by Jim Kirkland. I really like the concept of semi-scale appearance in a no compromise aerobatic airplane. I also hope the size of this airplane allows me to be competitive without spending a lot of money on a OS .91.
I have a copy of the 1972 MAN construction article, and plans. I'm currently accumulating the necessary wood and hardware. A few years ago, I worked at Seymour Johnson AFB here in North Carolina where the 335th Fighter Squadron (Chiefs) is home based. They currently fly F-15s, but during WW2, they flew P-51 Mustangs to escort our bombers and to beat up the opposing Me109s from a base in England. I going to use the distinctive "yellow nose" color scheme that was used back then and a special nose art theme based on their "Chiefs" squadron patch. (see attached).
