Sounds like a bad 4 in 1 controller.
Swap plugs for the Tail Motor and the Main motor and see if the Main motor spins .
If so you have a bad 4 in 1.
There is a Falcon 40 thread Come on over and we can get you flying.
Including a repair person for the 4 in 1 for a lot less than the $40 of a new one.

+1 on both counts.

Turning off the radio before unplugging the battery shouldn't cause any damage (but may cause the blades to spin uncontrollably, so it's not a good idea).
Any bad wrecks lately? The common failure mode for this is a blown main motor MOSFET, which can happen if you hit something at full throttle.

That'd be me... Assuming the MOSFET is the problem, for $5 I can fix it better than new.
