Default Dumb Air Cylinder Question

Hi,

This may be a dumb question, but i will ask anyhow!

I am looking at a particular air cylinder for a certain landing gear application (looking at the Robart 166) and i am wondering:

Do i have to find a cylinder that has the exact same throw as the throw i require?

Can the throw of the cylinder be more than what i need?

What happens then the gear leg gets to fully extended and the cylinder still has some push? Will it damage the cylinder? Will it use air at a great rate?

My idea was to have the cylinder bottom out (fully retracted) when the gear is up, and then reach full gear down at around (an estimate) 3/4 of the travel.

Sorry if this is simplistic and a dumb question - i searched for some basic info on how these cylinders work but came up with a big fat 0!

Thanks!
