I didn't hurt my fingers, but my experience was also painfull until I made sure to push on the clear plastic cap each time i was finished using the knife. It took two instances of the knife rolling off the bench and sticking in my foot for me to remember to put the cap on. It seems that more times than not, the knife will fall with the blade pointing down.
