With regard to the Tamiya flash unit, you may be able to use it, It all depends on what doesn't fit, the wire or the bulb. If its the bulb, you'll have to use an LED or small light bulb. I'd suggest using flashlight bulb, such as a mini mag light, and LED, or a 3mm grain of wheat 8v light bulb. You might need to use a resistor to drop the voltage for the LED and mag light bulb. It won't be much of a flash though, as the IR LED has a cycle time of about 1 second (the IR light shows up on any digital camera's viewfinder).

If it is the flash unit wires, just strip the black outer insulation off. It would be like the older style flash units (they didn't have any outer black jacket, just the three individually insulated wires). This would give a much smaller diameter wire that would be alot easier to stuff.
