The dust boot is there to keep dirt out. It is not intended to prevent air leaks. Examine ALL of glow engines on the market, airplane and boat. Look no dust boot, how on Earth do they run so well without an air seal. If the dust boot was there to prevent air leaks, it would be fitted so tight that the carb barrel action on rotary carbs would be impaired. Slide valve carbs are the exception.

Very nicely said. But I fear it wont be long before someone high on himself will claim that the Duke Fox in your signature doesn't have a clue about nitro engines.
Duke was and is my hero. If it wasn't for him it would have taken longer for others to learn how to cast a bypass in a crank case casting. He certainly was a great innovator, many manufacturers may never admit it but they have learned a lot from Duke Fox.
