Duane, I guess it's all how you look at it. The Tamiya kit you have to buy ($$ wise that is) all at once. A conversion project you can pick and choose the parts along the way (leave out or re-use the HL units or gearbox) and you might pick up a deal here and there on something not quite new but not used. Plus the fact it might be a tank Tamiya doesn't make is more along the lines I was addressing.

I know all the prices and where to get 'em so I won't go there. I just think it's a cheaper route in the end with a low investment starting out.
